A Fine Philip and Kelvin LaVerne “Classical” Coffee Table
20th Century

Acid-etched bronze, in the rectangular form, with fluted frame over fluted legs with block corners.  The etched top depicts a Biblical Scene, signed in top "Kelvin & Philip Laverne".

Philip and Kelvin Laverne were a New York based father and son team who designed and produced furniture and decorative arts from the early 1950s to the 1970s. Philip studied under the Ashcan School Realist John Sloan while Kelvin studied Modernism at New York Parsons School of Design.

Their preferred choice of material was metal, in particular enameled bronze over pewter which was then acid etched and patinated. The designs they created were mainly inspired by Neo Classical and Far Eastern themes and a number of rarer pieces were based on Egyptian motifs. Each piece has its own unique finish and style.

Philip and Kelvin each had their individual strengths; Philip was more responsible for the materials and graphics while his son took charge of the overall shape and form. Together they created a variety of interesting pieces from coffee and cocktail tables, cabinets, centre tables as well as sculptural wall plaques.
